Project Overview

M&P Mechanical was appointed as the Mechanical Contractor for the landmark Shanganagh Castle Estate Residential Development, located in Shankill, Dublin 18.

This large-scale project; one of Ireland’s largest social and affordable housing schemes which includes 546 residential units across multiple blocks, designed to deliver high-quality, energy-efficient homes for families and communities in South Dublin.

Our scope covered the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of all mechanical systems, from the central energy centre to each individual apartment. This included the district heating infrastructure, ventilation systems, boosted water services, fire protection, and full integration with the Building Management System (BMS).

Innovative and Low-Carbon Design

At the heart of Shanganagh lies a renewable district heating system designed to meet modern sustainability standards. The system is powered primarily by a Solid Energy air-to-water heat pump capable of producing up to 725 kW of heat, supported by Ideal Evomod high-efficiency gas boilers providing 1.5 MW of backup capacity.

This hybrid setup allows the site to maintain stable flow and return temperatures (65°C / 35°C) while minimising carbon emissions; even during peak winter demand.

Each apartment is equipped with a Danfoss Termix heat interface unit (HIU), supplying both heating and instantaneous domestic hot water. Uniquely, the heating is delivered through warm-air systems via Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) units rather than traditional radiators. These Zehnder ComfoAir Q350/Q450 HRUs ensure fresh, filtered air throughout the homes while recovering up to 90% of heat from exhaust air.

Together, these systems achieve a Building Energy Rating (BER) of A, ensuring comfort, efficiency, and low running costs for residents

Digital Integration and Control

The entire mechanical network is managed by a McCool Controls Building Management System (BMS), providing live data on temperature, energy use, and system performance.
Complementing this is the ELVACO sub-metering system, introduced by M&P Mechanical to enhance energy transparency and encourage sustainable usage. Each resident can monitor their own consumption — promoting both cost awareness and reduced environmental impact.

For building owners and operators, this integration provides intelligent control, remote diagnostics, and real-time optimisation across the site;  a key step toward future-ready smart building management.

Sustainability and Performance

Sustainability was a central pillar of the project. By prioritising renewable heat generation, efficient ventilation, and real-time control systems, Shanganagh achieved:

  • A BER “A” rating across all apartments 🏡

  • A Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) above 3.33, ensuring more than three units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed

  • Over 90% heat recovery efficiency in MVHR systems

  • Gross boiler efficiency up to 95%, ensuring optimal fuel utilisation

  • Significantly reduced carbon emissions in line with Ireland’s Climate Action Plan targets

This combination of smart technology and sustainable infrastructure positions the project as a national model for low-carbon, community-focused residential design.

Collaboration and Coordination

Close collaboration with Walls Construction, the LDA, and DLRCC was central to project success. Regular coordination meetings and transparent communication allowed challenges to be identified and resolved efficiently.

Our foremen worked closely with other trades to sequence works safely and efficiently, while our engineering team ensured all systems were integrated into AutoCAD-coordinated layouts. Every stage; from planning to commissioning, it was delivered with precision, professionalism, and teamwork.

Commissioning and Results

The testing and commissioning process was extensive, ensuring every system performed exactly as designed. From pressure testing and leak detection to performance calibration and safety checks, all systems met or exceeded specification.

Client feedback has been exceptionally positive; particularly in relation to the energy savings, reliability, and user-friendly control systems that now form part of everyday life at Shanganagh.

A Safe and Sustainable Build

Safety remained at the core throughout construction. M&P Mechanical implemented proactive risk assessments, regular toolbox talks, and collaborative safety coordination to maintain a clean, controlled, and safe site environment.

The system itself also enhances long-term safety through integrated gas detection, frost protection, and fire suppression systems monitored through the BMS.

Delivering the Future of Sustainable Living

The Shanganagh Castle Residential Development showcases what’s possible when engineering innovation meets environmental responsibility. It’s a testament to M&P Mechanical’s ability to deliver complex, future-ready mechanical systems that enhance community living while meeting Ireland’s sustainability goals.

This project reinforces M&P Mechanical’s reputation as one of Ireland’s leading mechanical contractors — dedicated to quality, collaboration, and climate-conscious design.
